Problem with ransom-ware pop-up
When I was last working within a wikimedia-project (Tuesday, April 16) a ransomware page popped up and closed my computer down. Perhaps something to check on. I have been informing the police and let computer specialists check through my computer. As they told me, they found a so-called mole and removed it. - Just wanted to let you know.Hornstrandir1 (talk) 12:52, 18 April 2024 (UTC)
- I doubt this is related to Commons (it could just be that you had a virus, and it chose to initiate an attack right as Commons was open by coincidence). If you 100% think this is Wikimedia's fault somehow you can contact the system administrators, though I doubt the Wikimedia servers are infected and the virus can bypass your browser's protections. —Matrix(!) {user - talk? -

- Hello colleagues. I am writing to you with a translation program. I don't know other wikipedia users who uploaded Emil Musayev's photo. It is true that I also uploaded a file years ago. But I don't remember what were the shortcomings. Araz Yaquboglu (talk) 07:54, 20 April 2024 (UTC)

Quayshires (talk · contributions · Move log · block log · uploads · Abuse filter log)
In Jan/Feb 2024, uploader was given "final" warning, subject to AN/B discussion and was blocked for a week for repeated uploading of copyright/non-free materials. In Mar/Apr 2024, uploader was again given a related warning and yet has continued to upload clearly non-free materials. After that (renewed) warning. Longer (or perhaps permanent) block may be required. Guliolopez (talk) 20:25, 19 April 2024 (UTC)
- Done Blocked for a month, all copyvios deleted. Other files are probably too simple to get a copyright. Yann (talk) 20:44, 19 April 2024 (UTC)
Lower protection of File:Flag of Virginia.svg and File:Seal of Virginia.svg
These two SVGs have been protected to admin only since last December, due to issues with back and forth reversions. I've been working on an update that I hope (fingers crossed) will address most of the complaints. I posted the link to it on the discussion page at File talk:Flag of Virginia.svg two weeks ago, looking for comments, and directly pinged participants last week when I didn't get any feedback. Per the advice of admin Mdaniels5757, who protected the files, I've waited another week, but would like to be able to update these two files now. Can an admin reduce the level of protection on these two SVGs? Perhaps to either extended or autoconfirmed users? Thanks all -- Patrick Neil, oѺ∞/Talk 23:29, 19 April 2024 (UTC)
- @Patrickneil: in a case like this, we wuould typically have both available and have commentary in the respectivw files about the accuracy and the sources. It is not the admins who should be the arbiter of truth, it is something that belongs to the users to justify. — billinghurst sDrewth 01:45, 22 April 2024 (UTC)
- Yes, precisely, admins shouldn't be arbiters of truth, it is something that belongs to the users who work with words to build consensus. That is why we shouldn't keep these SVGs locked to admin only. Right now, admins have determined that my version from last September is the true version that cannot be changed. I, a user, am saying that version was far from perfect. And in order to prevent forking the files, I've worked on fixes for months now to both improve and clean the SVGs and bring the whole design more in line with what limited sources we do have. I'm not afraid to defend this version on the talk pages where the discussion belongs, but in order to get that started again, I need them unlocked from admin only. Thanks again -- Patrick Neil, oѺ∞/Talk 02:30, 22 April 2024 (UTC)
- Can you show us that there is a consensus to make the changes that are proposed? Also, there is no "extended" protection for Commons, you probably meant autopatroller. Abzeronow (talk) 17:26, 22 April 2024 (UTC)
- Correct, I'm unclear if there is an upload protection level other than "upload=sysop". My edits are all based on what I would, yes, describe as the consensus version, which again, is a file I made the most recent revisions to last September. I just want to continue to fix issues with this version I uploaded but which then got locked because a series of, I assume, sockpuppets kept reverting to old 2005-era clipart versions of the SVGs. That is why I was curious if there was an upload protection level that would require a certain age of username or number of edits. But I will deal with the sockpuppets in appropriate forums if it keeps being an issue. I've waited five months to request this, I think that is an adequate cool down. I see no consensus for an indefinite lock and at this point I feel it is standing in the way of some basic progress. Thanks again -- Patrick Neil, oѺ∞/Talk 18:18, 22 April 2024 (UTC)

- @Mdaniels5757: , @Paddleboats: , @Nux: , @Skunkcrew: since I would also like to hear what they have to say on the matter. Abzeronow (talk) 18:44, 22 April 2024 (UTC)
- Oh, this... Well, it was an interesting side project to figure out history of this seal/flag and draw a proper Parazonium (sword)... a year ago ;). I would say the scabbard on the updated version feels a bit too wooden for my taste, but I guess that's not really crucial and still better then the old one so tomayto, tomahto (I'm fine with whatever). The helmet is nice and look pretty accurate both in terms of historical seals and Greek-ish looks (Amazon warrior). Nux (talk··dyskusja) 19:11, 22 April 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks Nux! I said this over in our discussion thread, but the version I want to upload today is also not 100% perfect, it's just a bit better than what is up now. I know it will need additional adjustments in the future. But the nature of Wikipedia/Wikimedia is iterative and incremental progress. If I had a perfect image I might be requesting its usage over at Commons:Requested updates to protected images, not here. Regardless, I might suggest that design comments go on our talk page thread and this thread be about whether/why the file lock would need to be perpetuated for another day/month/century. Thank you! -- Patrick Neil, oѺ∞/Talk 19:42, 22 April 2024 (UTC)
- @Patrickneil Done I know nothing about what is the correct version, but no one seems to object, and I think that autopatrol protection is likely enough to stop revert wars from happening again. —Mdaniels5757 (talk • contribs) 02:32, 23 April 2024 (UTC)

I think that in light of repeated unexplained deletions of icons for former Paris transport routes, such as the old Line 14 and the Ligne de Sceaux (see [1]), the template documentation should be limited to autoconfirmed users. --Minoa (talk) 19:55, 20 April 2024 (UTC)

This is a maintenance category that has been used on Top 200 symbol of municipalities in Japan images that should use vector graphics for years, and has been deleted three times the past month. Once after the category had been renamed to a completely different category and got deleted despite not even being empty, and once speedily deleted even though the category is years old and was still in use.
